Medical Device Testing & Development, Real Projects, and Big Impacts: 2025 Summer Internships

This past summer, two mechanical engineering interns joined Veranex and quickly found themselves doing the kind of work that defines real-world MedTech innovation, specifically medical device testing and development. Far from shadow roles, Joe (ME from University of Maryland, College Park) and Matt (a ME from University of Massachusetts Amherst) built test fixtures, executed design verification protocols, analyzed tissue-based results, performed materials research, and helped keep client programs moving forward. 

Projects that spanned MedTech 

Over ten weeks, the interns contributed to more than a dozen active programs across women’s health, maternal health, cardiology, diagnostics, and patient safety. They: 

• Designed and ran verification tests on vessel sealing devices, including tissue grasp, seal burst pressure, and impedance detection. 
• Supported cardiac ablation generator builds with fixture design, inspection, and quality documentation. 
• Assisted in concept generation and rapid prototyping for women’s health and stoma devices. 
• Brought dormant lab equipment back online, ensuring builds and sterilization stayed on schedule. 

Veranex internships provide opportunities for students to learn from and solve a wide range of engineering challenges, helping them grow technically while collaborating with our integrated teams to make meaningful contributions across programs with strong potential for impact in MedTech innovation. 

Showcasing Student Excellence

Hands-on medical device testing with real tissue 

One standout experience was direct involvement in tissue-based testing. Joe executed electrosurgical evaluations where clamping, sealing, and burst-pressure data were captured on actual tissue samples. He did so in alignment with regulated medical device testing methods, conducted in controlled certified facilities with experienced engineers providing insight and guidance.  Learning Rigor, Speed, and Collaboration 

Beyond technical skills like CAD, PDM, 3D printing, and fixture design, both interns learned what it means to work in a regulated development environment. They documented results within a Quality Management System, collaborated with quality and manufacturing colleagues, and experienced the urgency of client-facing deliverables. 

Why it matters 

For our interns, this was a summer of accelerated learning. For Veranex, it was proof of how quickly motivated engineers can add value when embedded in real programs. Their impact reflects not only their talent, but also the scale and diversity of work moving through our Product Development & Engineering organization every day.
