You be the Pathologist!

Where was this bone seen?

Answer

In the heart!

It is called os cordis. Indeed, some animals (mostly ruminants) can have bones inside their heart, located in the vicinity of trigones (os cordis sinistrum and os cordis dextrum), and forming part of the cardiac ‘skeleton.’

This radiographic image of an ovine heart was acquired using Veranex’s Faxitron MX-20 Radiography System.

Non-destructive x-ray analysis of medical devices and tissue explants is often essential and requires high precision cabinet x-ray systems. Veranex’s Faxitron provides images in seconds and exports in most digital formats. It provides invaluable nondestructive information about calcification of biologic material and integrity of metallic devices.

Faxitron imaging is one example from the comprehensive suite of Pathology Services offered by Veranex Preclinical Services’ in-house team of Veterinary Pathologists.
