YOU BE THE PATHOLOGIST!

What is this histologic staining and which organ with a Christmas tree shape does it highlight?

ANSWER

Hematoxylin-eosin-saffron staining in the tongue of a sheep!

Hematoxylin-eosin-saffron (HE&S) staining was used to stain this histological section from the tongue. This stain is routinely used by Veranex’s in-house pathology team to better identify the collagen fibers. This staining shows a sharp differentiation between muscle, stained in red or pink, and connective tissue, stained bright yellow or orange. This image shows the tongue muscle is stained in pink (M), the mucosal epithelium in red (E) and the collagen fibers in bright orange (C). HE&S staining allows collagen fibers to be distinguished from surrounding tissues with high contrast in a large variety of tissue samples and it is used in analytic and diagnostic applications.

The Veranex team sends best wishes for the upcoming Holiday Season to all our partners, friends and their loved ones!

This histopathology image is one example from the comprehensive suite of Pathology Services offered by Veranex Preclinical Services’ in-house team of Veterinary Pathologists.
